Dr. Sheppard Kominars: "The Journal Doctor"

Write For Life Write For Life
surviving cancer
Journal writing is a fun method of cancer prevention.

Dr. Kominars has been presenting workshops on journal writing at hospitals, senior centers, support groups, and fitness centers all over the United States since 2001. His book, "Write For Life: Healing Body, Mind and Spirit Through Journal Writing," (Cleveland Clinic Press, 2007; Revised Edition, Kaplan Publications, July 2010) was written primarily for men and women in recovery from crisis. In 2009, he began directing his attention to a younger audience with different issues and problems, and he has developed these ideas to provide support for young adults who can benefit from a vital technique to improve both health and quality of life.

This focus on journaling of Dr. Kominars has provided the basis for creating "Journal To Win" in which he and Dr. Kim Hiatt have directed their many years of counseling expertise to develop innovative materials and services that will introduce and support the on-going practice of using writing for improving health. This emphasis on health and self-improvement is different from what is presently available which has publication as its focus for journal writing. Scientific research over the past twenty years validates the magnitude of the need for new materials that present this proven problem-solving, healing technique to adolescents and young adults.

Dr. Kominars has written two previous books on recovery and is a cancer survivor who has worked over the past thirty years in counseling and consulting. His workshops at UCSF, Stanford Complementary Care Center, Kaiser Permanente, Cancer Center of the Desert, and other senior residences and centers have inspired participants. He began teaching writing in 1956 at Washington College and has a long career in higher education and consulting with major corporations in health and education. He has been a Branch Chief in the U.S. Office of Education, Vice President of two universities, as well as a dean. He has lived in many cities and countries, but since 1986, San Francisco has been his home. He is a graduate of Kenyon College, Columbia University, and Boston University.

Information about his books on recovery can be found on www.journaldoctor.com and www.writeforlife.net His previous books on recovery are "Accepting Ourselves," (Harper/Collins, 1989), and "Accepting Ourselves and Others," (Hazelden, 1996). His most recent book, "Write for Life: Healing Body, Mind and Spirit Through Journal Writing," was published by the Cleveland Clinic Press in 2007, and a revised edition is published by Kaplan Publications, 2010.

He began journaling in 1955, when he was 23, without any scientific research to support his efforts, and has continued writing because of its positive effect on his health and well-being during his lifetime. In the year 2000, after diagnosis and treatment for cancer, he began presenting workshops and seminars across the country on journal writing and health.

The "Journal To Win" program is the result of his research and his conviction about the importance of journal writing as a technique for improving health and problem solving for young adults.

He has written four novels, five plays and poetry over the course of his lifetime during which he has lived all over the U.S., in Europe and in Puerto Rico.

In 2008, he hosted his own radio program on journal writing on the Healthylife.org network. He has been interviewed often on national radio. Contact: Donna Gould, Phoenix Media, (732) 441-1519; fax: (732) 566-1913; donnagould@sprintmail.com
